| The Eagle Hotel was established in 1868 and originally known as the Eagle Inn. It was one of several staging inns for changing horses on the road between Scotland and England as well as providing rest on the local routes between Jedburgh, Kelso, Duns, etc. A warm and friendly welcome awaits you at the Eagle Hotel in Lauder, open seven days a week, situated in the Scottish Borders near Edinburgh. | Lauder is situated at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills beside the River Leader on one of the oldest routes between Scotland and England, in Roman Times this was known as Dere Street. Dere Street came from the Roman settlement of Trimontium, modern Newstead, following the valleys to pass over the Lammermuir Hills. As a major access to the North, Lauder has through history been a place of importance. Before 1500 the town had been created a Burgh by royal Charter, these rights were renewed by King James IV in 1502. In the 12th Century it was the site of a major castle this later became Thirlestane Castle, Thirlestane Castle was built in 1673 by Royal architect Sir William Bruce, famous for his design of Holyrood House. There is plenty of local things to do for walkers, fishers, shooters. There are local shops all within easy walking distance, art gallery, leisure centre, tourist information centre, to name but a few. |
